The nabi DreamTab and the nabi Elev-8 are both tablets designed for children from Fuhu, so how do they compare? Both tablets have a larger than normal size of 8″ but the resolution of the DreamTab’s touchscreen is 1920×1200 pixels whilst that of the Elev-8 is only 1280×800 in comparison. Both come with a protective silicone bumper which is only available in nabi’s signature red.
Both tablets are Android tablets. The DreamTab runs 4.4 KitKat out of the box whilst the Elev-8, being a newer tablet, runs the more recent 5.1 Lollipop. Both tablets also come with nabi’s Blue Morpho OS overlay, which is a modification of the standard Android OS with over 400 parent approved and kid-friendly changes. Both tablets can also use Google Play and get content from there.
The DreamTab has a fairly substantial 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory, but the Elev-8 has double that with 32 GB. Each comes with a micro SD card slot that can expand the available storage with memory cards up to 32 GB in size. The DreamTab’s processor is quad core whilst the Elev-8’s is an octo core. Both tablets comes with WiFi and Bluetooth as well as Near Field Communication, a short range and secure communications method rarely seen in tablets other than nabi’s. Both come with the custom nabi Connector port, which fulfils the charging and connection roles of a micro USB port but which also has HDMI capabilities.
Both tablets come with front and rear facing cameras and in both cases the resolutions are the same; 2.0 megapixels (MP) for the front facing camera and a substantial 5.0 MP for the rear facing one. Both come with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and stereo speakers.
Both tablets come with the same parental controls, provided by nabi themselves, and both therefore come with a range of included educational content – including the Wings Learning System – and games, plus time controls which can be adjusted by app or app group. Both also come with nabi Coins which allow children to be rewarded with a virtual currency that can be exchanged for games and other content in nabi’s curated content stores, as well as nabi Konnect, a safe social media experience for children.
The two tablets are unsurprisingly very similar in capabilities and content. The DreamTab has a better resolution screen but the Elev-8 has a faster processor and, most usefully, more internal memory. Both have the same disadvantage with the nabi Connector. However, the nabi Elev-8 is a newer and more up to date tablet than the nabi DreamTab, but as a result it is also more expensive to buy.
