The LeapPad Ultimate and the Tagital T7K are both 7″ children’s tablets, so how do they compare? The Ultimate is an educational tablet whilst the T7K is a more general-purpose device. The screen resolution of the tablets is the same, with both at 1024×600 pixels. Each comes with a protective case that comes in different colours; the case on the Ultimate has a slot for the accompanying stylus.
The T7K is an Android tablet, running 4.4.2 out of the box, but the Ultimate is not an Android tablet, instead running Brio OS. The T7K has access to the Google Play store; the Ultimate does not and can only get apps from the LeapFrog App Center. The Ultimate also has a cartridge slot that will take LeapFrog cartridges.
Both tablets come with 8 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory but the T7K also has a memory card slot that will take SD cards up to 32 GB in size, whilst the Ultimate lacks such. Both come with WiFi and a micro USB port; both lack Bluetooth.
Both tablets come with front and rear facing cameras. On the Ultimate, the front and rear facing cameras both have a resolution of 2.0 megapixels (MP) whilst the T7K’s front facing camera only has a resolution of 0.3 MP; the rear facing camera’s resolution is 2.0 MP.
The T7K comes with third party parental controls from Zoodles, which has some in-built educational content. The Ultimate’s parental controls are LeapFrog’s own strong and inflexible controls. The Ultimate can only view around 1,000 pieces of hand-picked web content that is suitable for children and this cannot be altered. The Ultimate’s primary use is as an educational tablet and it also comes with some included content.
Technically, the main advantage the T7K has over the Ultimate is the memory card slot. The main advantage the Ultimate has is the higher resolution front-facing camera. Neither tablet is that spectacular when it comes to technical specs. The Ultimate is an educational tablet and has very little capability outside that area, whereas the T7K is a more general-purpose tablet. The Ultimate can only get content from the LeapFrog App Center which is both pricy and totally focussed on educational use, even the games. The T7K can get a broader range of Android content, ranging from free upwards, and can be used on far more of the internet. The LeapPad Ultimate is a narrow-focus educational tablet whilst the Tagital T7K has a broader range of uses, but both tablets are technically at the lower end these days.
