The iRulu 7″ Kids Tablet and the nabi DreamTab are both children’s tablets, so how do they compare? The first difference is the size; the iRulu is a 7″ tablet whilst the DreamTab is significantly larger, being a 10’1″ tablet. This results in a difference in the screen resolution, with the Kids Tablet have a resolution of 1024×600 pixels compared to 1920×1200 pixels for the DreamTab. Both tablets come with a protective case; that on the Kids Tablet comes in several colours whilst that of the DreamTab comes in nabi’s signature red.
Both tablets are Android tablets, with the Kids Tablet running 7.1 Nougat out of the box. The DreamTab runs the significantly older 4.4. KitKat; however, the OS on the DreamTab has been extensively modified with nabi’s Blue Morpho OS overlay, which has a suite of child-friendly and parent-approved features. Both tablets have access to Google Play.
Both the Kids Tablet and the DreamTab come with 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory and both also come with memory card slots capable of taking memory cards up to 32 GB in size. Both tablets come with WiFi and Bluetooth but the DreamTab also comes with Near Field Communication, a short range, secure wireless communication method. The Kids Tablet has a micro USB port; the DreamTab has a nabi Connector, a custom connector that functions as both a USB port and an HDMI port but requires a custom cable.
Both tablets come with front and rear facing cameras. The front facing camera on the Kids Tablet has a resolution of 0.3 megapixels (MP) whilst the rear facing one has a resolution of 2.0 MP. The front facing camera on the DreamTab has a resolution of 2.0 MO and the rear facing one a resolution of 5.0 MP.
Both tablets come with parental controls. The Kids Tablet has third party controls provided by iWawa, which allow parents to control content, usage and internet sites their child can visit. The controls on the DreamTab are provided by nabi and are part of the Blue Morpho OS overlay. The DreamTab also has educational uses integrated with the OS overlay, the Wings Learning System, as well as the Dream Pro Studio creative suite, the nabi Dream Pen used with that suite and a child-friendly app store where children can spend nabi Coins.
The DreamTab is a larger tablet, which may or may not be a benefit – smaller hands may have more difficulty with larger tablets. The custom nabi Connector is an inconvenience compared to a standard micro USB port. Internal memory and card memory for the Kids Tablet and the DreamTab are identical but the DreamTab has better cameras. The DreamTab’s base OS may be older but the OS overlay adds a lot more features, and the tablet is better for education. The iRulu 7″ Kids Tablet is generally inferior to the nabi DreamTab.
