Tablet Comparison: Dragon Touch Y88X vs Sprout Channel Cubby

Dragon Touch Y88XThe Dragon Touch Y88X and the Sprout Channel Cubby are both 7″ tablets designed for children, so which tablet is the best? Both have a touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600, which is at the lower end for modern tablets. Each has a protective silicone bumper with strengthened corners intended to reduce the likelihood of the tablet being damaged if it is dropped, although that on the Y88X protects more of the tablet than the Cubby’s; the Y88X comes in blue, green, red and pink whilst the Cubby’s only comes in green.

Both the Cubby and the Y88X are Android tablets and they both run 4.4 KitKat. Each can be used to access Google Play; for the Cubby, Google Play can only be used outside of Cubby Mode.

The Dragon Touch tablet comes with 8 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory; the Cubby comes with a substantially higher 16GB (which actually means, in real terms, more than double). They both have a memory card slot that can be used to expand the memory using memory cards up to 32GB in size.

Each comes with speakers, a headphone jack and a microphone. Each tablet also has a front facing camera and a rear facing camera. Those on the Cubby are both 2.0 megapixel (MP) resolution. Those on the Y88X are more uncertain, as the manufacturer gave different responses. It is believed that the front facing camera is probably at least 0.3MP is resolution and the rear facing at least 2.0MP.

Both tablets come with WiFi but the Cubby also comes with Bluetooth, allowing it to communicate with other Bluetooth devices. Both also come with a micro USB port but the Cubby also comes with an HDMI port. The Y88X also has a separate AC charging socket as well as the more standard micro USB port. Both also have quad core processors. The Dragon Touch comes with only 512MB of RAM whilst the Cubby comes with double that, with 1GB of RAM. The battery life on the Cubby is also listed as being better, at more than double the listed life for the Y88X.

Both come with parental controls, those on the Y88X provided by the Zoodles app. Reportedly, customer support for both tablets isn’t brilliant.

Of the two tablets, the Cubby is noticeably more powerful than the Y88X. It is also noticeably more expensive. The Dragon Touch Y88X is more suited to younger children who may break their first tablet, as it is practically disposable. The Cubby is a better tablet for those with slightly older children and a larger budget.
