The Dragon Touch K8 Kids and the nabi Elev-8 are both 8″ tablets designed for children. Each has a screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The K8 Kids comes with a two-tone protective case with integral stand and attached stylus. The Elev-8 comes with a silicone bumper intended to reduce damage if the tablet is dropped in nabi’s signature red.
Both tablets are Android tablets with the K8 Kids running 6.0 Marshmallow. The Elev-8 runs the older 5.1 Lollipop, although this has been modified with nabi’s Blue Morpho OS overlay, a suite of child-friendly additions, over 400 in total, to Android. These include educational options, content and a child-friendly app store. Both tablets can access Google Play and the content that is available from there.
The K8 Kids comes with 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory but the Elev-8 comes in at double this with 32 GB. Both tablets have a memory card slot that will take memory cards up to 32 GB. The K8 Kids has a quad core processor but the Elev-8 has an octo core. The K8 Kids does come with 2GB of RAM compared to the 1 GB of the Elev-8. Both tablets come with Bluetooth and WiFi but the Elev-8 also comes with Near Field Communication, a short range and secure wireless communication method that is uncommon in children’s tablets. The K8 Kids comes with a standard micro USB port but the Elev-8 comes with nabi’s custom nabi Connector, which also functions as an HDMI port.
Both tablets have front and rear cameras and in both cases the front camera has a 2.0 megapixel (MP) resolution and the rear camera a 5.0 MP resolution. Both tablets have a headphone jack and a microphone but the Elev-8 has stereo speakers compared to the single speaker of the K8 Kids.
Each tablet comes with parental controls. Those on the K8 Kids are provided by KIDOZ whilst those on the Elev-8 are part of the Blue Morpho OS overlay. Both have educational uses, some provided through KIDOZ on the K8 Kids and through the Wings Learning System on the Elev-8. The Elev-8 also has extensive time controls, an app store that can only be used with nabi’s virtual currency that children cannot purchase as well as various integrated child-safe social features.
The two tablets are the same size and the same resolution, as are the cameras. The Elev-8 has a more powerful processor, although less RAM, and much more internal memory. The K8 Kids uses a more recent version of Android but that of the Elev-8 is extensively modified just for children. The K8 Kids does use a standard cable rather than requiring a custom cable like the nabi tablet does. As a result of the Blue Morpho OS overlay the Elev-8 comes with a lot of included content, although the K8 Kids does have content from KIDOZ as well as the included Disney content. The nabi Elev-8 is a generally more powerful, more fully featured tablet than the Dragon Touch K8 Kids.
