The LeapPad Ultimate is a children’s educational tablet and the Dragon Touch X10 Kids is a tablet designed for children, so how do they compare? The first difference is the size; the Ultimate is a 7″ tablet whilst the X10 Kids is a larger 10.1″ tablet. The resolution of the Ultimate is 1024×600 pixels whilst the X10 Kids has a higher resolution at 1280×800 pixels, although it isn’t uncommon for larger tablets to have greater resolutions. Both come with a protective case in different colours, although the X10’s case also has an integral stand.
The X10 Kids is an Android tablet running 7.0 Nougat out of the box, whilst the Ultimate isn’t an Android tablet, instead running Brio OS. The X10 Kids has access to Google Play, whilst the Ultimate does not. The Ultimate can only get apps from the LeapFrog App Center and will also take LeapFrog cartridges.
The Ultimate has 8 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory and lacks a memory card slot. The X10 Kids comes with double the internal memory, 16 GB, and also has a memory card slot capable of taking memory cards up to 64 GB in size. Both tablets have WiFi and a micro USB port; the X10 Kids also comes with Bluetooth, a DC charging port and a micro HDMI port.
Both tablets come with front and rear facing cameras. The cameras on the Ultimate both have a 2.0 megapixel (MP) resolution, as do both cameras on the X10 Kids.
The Ultimate comes with LeapFrog’s very strong and inflexible parental controls. Children may only visit approximately 1,000 pieces of web content that have been approved by LeapFrog’s educators as being suitable, and all of the content available, even the games, is essentially educational in nature. The X10 Kids’ parental controls are through Kidoz and are much more flexible, as parents can control what sites a child can visit. Both tablets have an estimated battery life of five hours.
The X10 Kids being a bigger tablet may be either a plus or a minus; bigger tablets may be harder for children to hold. The camera resolutions are the same, but the X10 Kids has more memory, the ability to expand the memory and, as an Android tablet, can get cheaper content from a much wider range than can the Ultimate. the LeapFrog Ultimate is an inflexible educational tablet that has little use out of that area whilst the Dragon Touch X10 Kids is a more general purpose, and generally technically superior, tablet.
