Dragon Touch X10 KidsThe Dragon Touch X10 Kids is a larger than normal 10.1″ tablet (most children’s tablets tend to be 7″ tablets) from Tablet Express. This is a variation on the X10 tablet that is aimed at children. It has a screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels and comes with a protective case that is available in several colours. The case has an integral stand which can be folded out. This allows children to use the tablet to watch, study or read without having to hold it in their hands.

The X10 Kids is an Android tablet, running 7.0 Nougat out of the box. Google Play comes pre-installed on the tablet, allowing access to the apps, games, ebooks and other content that can be found in that store. The X10 Kids comes with 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory and a memory card slot that will take memory cards up to 64 GB in size. The tablet has a front and a rear facing camera, both with a resolution of 2.0 megapixels.

The X10 Kids comes with 802.11b/g/n WiFi but not 5G, Bluetooth 4.0 and micro USB and micro HDMI ports; the HDMI port allows output from the tablet to be run through a suitable television. It has a headphone jack and a DC power socket for charging the battery. It has 2 GB of RAM and a quad core processor, built-in microphone and a side-mounted speaker. The average battery life of the X10 Kids is listed as being 5 hours.

At 1280×800 pixels the screen resolution is perhaps a bit on the low side for tablets of this size, although it is still better than some older 10.1″ tablets. The front-facing camera’s resolution is typical for most children’s tablets; some still have lower resolution front cameras but few will have higher. The rear facing camera is on the low end of typical for a children’s tablet; very few tablets will have a lower resolution although an increasing number of children’s tablets come with higher resolution rear cameras.

At 16 GB, the internal memory is about standard for a more modern children’s tablet; older tablets tend to have less as do some of the lower-end ones. A memory card slot is standard but being able to take cards up to 64 GB is more unusual; with children’s tablets, 32 GB memory cards are more common. The battery life, at the listed 5 hours, is below average. Although battery life does depend on the use the tablet is being put to, this is still fairly poor.

Does the Dragon Touch X10 Kids Come With Parental Controls?

Parents want to keep their children safe online which is where parental controls come in. The X10 Kids comes with parental controls provided through Kidoz. Using these, parents can ensure that children only have access to videos, content, sites and apps that they approve of. Kidoz also comes with some educational and entertaining content included. It also has an included app store, the Kidoz App Store. This is a regulated app store that only contains hand-picked content. Children can “purchase” content from this store but only using a virtual currency that parents can buy and give to them.

Kidoz Kid Mode is COPPA Certified; outside of this mode parents can access more of the tablet and control just what a child is allowed to do. Parents can also limit the amount of time that children can spend on the tablet, as well as block ads and in-app purchases.

Can Children Watch Streaming Content on the Dragon Touch X10 Kids?

With the stand built into the case, it is easier to watch videos on the X10 Kids. The headphone socket means that others do not need to listen to whatever is being watched as well. The X10 Kids can download the Netflix app through Google Play, which can then be activated using the parental controls. Similarly, the YouTube Kids app can also be downloaded, installed and activated. Parents can allow their child access to the YouTube site or the full YouTube app if desired, but they may not wish to do so as there will be less control over the content.

Can Children Video Chat Using the Dragon Touch X10 Kids?

By parents downloading and installing apps such as Skype from Google Play then activating them for use by their child, children can video chat on the X10 Kids. It does have a front facing camera which, at 2.0 megapixels, is certainly adequate for the task. Children will not be able to download and install such apps themselves, though; a parent will need to set them up.

What is the Included Disney Content for the Dragon Touch X10 Kids?

The tablet comes with 18 Disney ebooks and 8 Disney audio books. The ebooks can be read with, or by, children, and the audio books can easily be listened to by themselves. The ebooks and audios are from various popular Disney properties.

Does the Dragon Touch X10 Kids Have Any Educational Uses?

Some educational material is available through the Kidoz parental controls, including educational games, apps and videos, that is suited to a child. Google Play is another source of educational content of similar types, although on Google Play the content is not selected to be specifically suited to children. As well as these, there are websites that also have educational material available.

Summing Up the Dragon Touch X10 Kids

The X10 Kids is, at 10.1″, one of the largest children’s tablets around. Most children’s tablets are still 7″ although there are an increasing number of modern children’s tablets available that are larger, with 8″ tablets now becoming more common. The screen resolution is not as high as might be expected from a larger tablet, as these often have higher resolutions due to the larger screen.

The internal memory, at 16 GB, is decent and what is found in many children’s tablets, and the 1 GB RAM is double the amount seen in many competing tablets. Some tablets have more memory but very few modern ones have less. Memory cards are useful for storing downloaded and created content on, such as photos and videos; being able to take memory cards up to 64 GB is still unusual in children’s tablets, as most will only take 32 GB cards. The resolution of the front-facing camera is now fairly standard for a child’s tablet but for the rear camera higher resolutions are becoming more common.

The battery life is not truly terrible, but it isn’t great either. Battery life does depend on what use the tablet is put to, and some uses do run the battery down faster. Most tablets will have a better battery life than this; should the tablet be mobile, it will be a good idea to consider taking methods of charging it along. A micro USB port is common but a separate mains charger is less so and many children’s tablets lack HDMI capability. Five hours is not great for battery life.

Tablet Express themselves can, on occasion, be a bit hit or miss when it comes to customer service, but they do appear to be improving. This isn’t something to do with the tablet itself but rather with aftercare and support. The Dragon Touch X10 Kids is one of the bigger tablets around, and perhaps the biggest from the manufacturer; the range is seeing continual improvement, which is a good sign.
