Both the Kindle Fire HD 6 Kids Edition and the Kurio 7S are tablets aimed at children. The HD 6 is a 6″ kids tablet (although the more expensive HD 7 is a 7″ version of it) whilst the 7S is a 7″ tablet. The resolution on the 7S is 1024×600 pixels, whilst the Kids Edition’s screen has a higher resolution of 1280×800 pixels.
There are other differences between the two tablets. The Kurio tablet runs on Android, currently 4.2 Jelly Bean, whilst the HD 6 runs Amazon’s own Android variant, Fire OS, currently Fire OS 4, Sangria. This can mean differences in what apps are compatible, or available, on the tablets, but this is the case with any Android device.
Both tablets have 8GB of internal memory, but the Kurio 7S has an external memory card port that can expand the memory available to 40 GB. The Kids Edition lacks such a port, but it does come with unlimited storage on Amazon’s Cloud Drive, enabling pictures and videos, for example, to be uploaded there with a WiFi connection.
Both have a front and a rear facing camera, with the front facing ones being identical, and the rear facing one being slightly better on the 7S.
The 7S has stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack with a mic pin. The HD 6 has a speaker and a stereo headphone jack. Both devices have built-in microphones.
The 7S comes with the Kurio Store of curated apps, and the ability to install other stores. The HD 6 comes with a year’s subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, which allows over 5,000 hand-curated apps, books, games, television programmes and films to be used as much as desired for no extra cost, a greater number than the pre-loaded apps on the 7S. The HD 6 can also, with a parental profile, add extra content from Amazon, whilst the 7S can add some other app stores.
Both tablets have built-in WiFi and a micro-USB port, suitable for charging the tablet and connecting other devices, but the Kids Edition also comes with Bluetooth. The Kids Edition also has a quad core processor.
Many of the features are fairly comparable, but the Kids Edition has a better screen, and the 7S the ability to increase external storage. The Kids Edition can store unlimited content online, and having access to the content in FreeTime can be a big saving.
