Which is Better, the Dragon Touch K8 Kids or the nabi Jr?

Dragon Touch K8 Kids

Dragon Touch K8 KidsThe Dragon Touch K8 Kids and the nabi Jr are both tablets designed for children so what are the differences between them? The first difference is the size; the K8 Kids is larger than many children’s tablets at 8″ whilst the nabi Jr is smaller at 5″. There is also a difference in screen resolutions with the K8 Kids having 1280×800 pixels compared to the Jr’s 800×480 pixels. Bigger tablets tend to have higher resolutions than smaller ones. The K8 Kids has a two-tone case with integral stand and attached stylus. The Jr has a silicone bumper in nabi’s signature red.

Bath tablets are Android tablets with the K8 Kids running 6.0 Marshmallow compared to the 4.4 KitKat of the Jr. The Jr does come with nabi’s Blue Morpho OS overlay, an add-on to the Android OS that includes over 400 child-friendly and parent approved tweaks.

The K8 Kids has 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory, double the 8 GB of the Jr. Both tablets have memory card slots that will take memory cards up to 32 GB in size. Both also come with WiFi and Bluetooth but the Jr also comes with Near Field Communication, a short-range, secure and slow wireless transfer method. Both have quad core processors but the K8 Kids comes with 2 GB of RAM compared to the 1 GB of the Jr. The K8 Kids has a standard micro USB port but the Jr has a custom nabi Connector, which requires a custom cable but also functions as an HDMI port.

The K8 Kids has front and rear facing cameras. The front-facing camera has 2.0 megapixel (MP) resolution and the rear facing camera is 5.0 MP. The Jr only comes with a single camera, although it is swivel mounted, with a 2.0 MP resolution. Both tablets have a mic and headphone jack but the Jr has stereo speakers.

Each tablet comes with parental controls. Those of the K8 Kids are through KIDOZ whilst those on the Jr are through nabi. KIDOZ comes with included educational content and games and the Jr comes with the Wings Learning System, and parents can reward children on the Jr with nabi Coins, a digital currency that a parent buys and children can use to purchase content from nabi’s curated app store.

These are two rather different tablets. The K8 Kids is more technically capable than the nabi Jr, with the exception of its battery life, which at a stated three hours is rather poor. The Jr is a tablet that is aimed at younger children, rather than older ones; the K8 Kids may well be usable for longer. The software on the Jr is more tightly integrated with the tablet, thanks to the Blue Morpho OS overlay. The nabi Jr is better suited as a starter tablet for younger children whilst the Dragon Touch K8 Kids is more powerful and more suited to older ones.
