The LeapPad Platinum from LeapFrog and the InnoTab MAX from VTech are both 7″ educational tablets designed for children. There are differences between the two tablets, of course, as well as similarities. The screen resolutions of both tablets is identical at 1024×600 pixels.
Both tablets are built with children in mind, with custom-designed cases intended to reduce the chance of damage. The MAX comes with a removable screen cover that doubles as a stand, and the Platinum comes with a stylus that attached to the case. Both tablets are therefore less likely to be damaged by children, although damage is, of course, always possible. VTech’s tablet is an Android tablet, running 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, whilst the Platinum uses LeapFrog’s own system.
Each tablet comes with 8 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory, but the MAX also takes memory cards, allowing the memory to be expanded using memory cards up to 32GB. Both tablets have WiFi and a single speaker, as well as 3.5mm headphone jacks and a USB connector for connecting the tablets to other devices, as well as recharging them. Both also have cartridge ports, for use with the respective company’s cartridge library.
The InnoTab has a curated Android app store to get Android apps from the InnoTab Learning Lodge, whilst the LeapPad’s curated app store is the LeapFrog App Center, which is not an Android store. Each has very strong parental controls, with those of the Platinum being the strongest; the Platinum can only be used to view a selection of hand-chosen and approved content online.
The InnoTab has only one camera, a 2.0 megapixel (MP) swivel mounted camera that can be rotated to point to the front or the rear, whilst the LeapPad has two cameras, one front mounted and one rear, both 2.0 MP in resolution.
Both tablets have been designed from the ground up with children in mind. Both are also educational tablets with strong parental controls. The MAX is probably slightly more flexible than the Platinum, and has more memory; the Platinum has stronger parental controls and is definitely just an educational tablet, although neither should be confused with tablets intended for entertainment.
