The Dragon Touch X10 Kids and the nabi Jr are both tablets designed for children, so how do they compare? First there is the size; the X10 Kids is a larger than usual 10.1″ whilst the Jr is a smaller than usual 5″. There is also a difference in the screen resolutions; the X10 Kids has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels whilst the resolution of the Jr is only 800×480. Both have protective cases intended to reduce the chance of damage if the tablet is dropped, the Jr’s in nabi’s signature red whilst the X10 Kids’ case comes in several colours and also has an integral stand.
Both tablets are powered by Android with the X10 Kids running 7.0 Nougat out of the box whilst the Jr only runs 4.4 KitKat, even though it comes with nabi’s Blue Morpho OS overlay, a package of tweaks to the base Android system.
The X10 Kids has 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory, double the 8 GB of the Jr. Both tablets have memory card slots; the slot on the X10 Kids will take cards up to 64 GB compared to the 32 GB of the Jr. Both tablets come with WiFi and Bluetooth but the nabi Jr also comes with Near Field Communication, a short-range, secure and slow wireless transfer method. Both tablets have quad core processors with the X10 Kids having 2 GB of RAM, double the 1 GB of the Jr. The X10 Kids has a standard micro USB port, micro HDMI port and DC charger; the Jr has a custom nabi Connector, which functions as both USB and HDMI but requires a custom cable.
The X10 Kids has front and rear facing cameras, both with a resolution of 2.0 megapixels (MP). The Jr has a single camera, also 2.0 MP resolution, which is swivel mounted. Both tablets have a mic and headphone socket but the Jr also has stereo speakers.
Both tablets have parental controls. The controls on the X10 Kids are provided through Kidoz, which has some educational content and games as well as an app store. The nabi Jr’s controls are provided by nabi themselves, and include the Wings Learning System and nabi Coins, a virtual currency parents can reward kids with to buy approved content. Something similar is also built into Kidoz.
These are rather different tablets. In most ways the X10 Kids is superior and more powerful than the Jr, although the stated battery life of the X10 Kids is, at five hours, not great. The Jr is a tablet that is deliberately aimed at younger children whilst the X10 Kids will still work for older ones. The Blue Morpho OS Overlay means that the software on the nabi Jr is more tightly integrated with the tablet. The nabi Jr is definitely a starter tablet aimed at younger children whilst the Dragon Touch X10 Kids is a bigger, more powerful tablet that is suited to older ones.
