Both the InnoTab MAX and the Kurio 7S are 7″ tablets designed for children that use the Android operating system. Each tablet has a touchscreen with a 1024×600 pixel display. The hardware of the InnoTab MAX has been specifically designed for children, with additional controls on the casing of the tablet, as well as a removable screen cover that also works as a stand. The Kurio 7S has a silicone bumper to help protect it from damage.
The 7S and the MAX both run Android; the 7S has Android 4.2, the MAX the slightly higher version of 4.2.2. The Kurio is more of a regular Android tablet, with access to the Android ecosystem, whilst the InnoTab is more specifically intended for children, and only has access to the VTech approved apps available from their store.
Each tablet comes with 8GB of internal memory. In both cases, this can be increased by use of the micro SD card slot, which will take memory cards up to 32GB, meaning that each tablet’s memory can be increased to a maximum of 40GB.
The Kurio has stereo speaker, whilst the InnoTab has only one. Each tablet has a headphone jack, a built in microphone, WiFi and a micro USB port. The MAX also has a cartridge slot, which will take the range of InnoTab cartridges.
The InnoTab has one camera, with a 2.0 megapixel (MP) resolution. This camera is mounted on a 180 degree swivel, which means that the camera can be rotated to point forwards, backwards, or anywhere in between. The Kurio has two cameras, a rear facing 2.1 MP one and a front facing 0.3MP one.
Both tablets have parental controls built in. The Kurio has an adult mode, enabling it to be used like a regular tablet. The InnoTab MAX can only be used to visit approved web sites, although the parent can add more sites to the list, if desired.
The tablets are intended for different uses. The Kurio 7S is an Android tablet with some additions to make it safer for children to use. The InnoTab MAX is an educational tablet designed for children, and which, when the InnoTab cartridges are used, allows the parent to keep track of their child’s educational progress.
