LeapFrog’s LeapPad 3 and VTech’s InnoTab MAX are both educational tablets designed for children. The LeapPad 3 is only a 5″ tablet, whilst the InnoTab MAX is 7″; the LeapPad’s screen has a resolution of only 480×237 pixels compared to the InnoTab’s 1024×600 pixels. The InnoTab’s screen is also more touch sensitive than that of the LeapPad 3. The InnoTab is an Android tablet, whilst the LeapPad uses LeapFrog’s own system. Both tablets are designed for children; the case of the InnoTab MAX has more features, including a detachable screen cover which functions as a stand, but both have controls built into the case itself.
The LeapPad 3 has two 2.0 megapixel (MP) cameras, one front facing and one rear facing. The InnoTab has only one 2.0 MP camera, but this is swivel mounted which enables it to be rotated so that it can point to both the front and the rear, and anything between those two points. Each tablet has WiFi; the LeapPad will only visit LeapFrog’s list of approved websites, whilst the InnoTab can be configured to visit any site the parent approves of. Each tablet can also only download apps from the relevant company’s app store. Each tablet also has a cartridge slot, enabling the use of cartridges from the relevant company.
The InnoTab MAX comes with 8GB of internal memory which, with the micro SD memory card slot, can be expanded to 40GB. The LeapFrog tablet only has 4GB of memory. Each has a single speaker, a headphone jack and a built in microphone, as well as a micro USB port for charging and connecting to other devices.
Whilst these are both educational tablets designed for children, the InnoTab MAX is in many ways far superior to the LeapPad 3. It is more powerful, ahs a larger, much higher resolution screen, and is far more flexible when it comes to using the internet. Both have high levels of parental controls, but those of the InnoTab are more easily configurable. The LeapPad 3 is, due to the smaller screen, smaller and lighter than the InnoTab MAX.
