The Kindle Fire HD 6 Kids Edition comes with a one year subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited (which normally costs at least $2.99 per month with Amazon Prime for one child, and $4.99 without) included, so what is FreeTime?
FreeTime is a collection of over 8,000 games, television shows, educational apps and books that have been hand-curated and selected as being appropriate for children. The content chosen is aimed at children from age 3-10. With FreeTime Unlimited, children have unlimited access to the included content for as long as the subscription is active.
FreeTime allows a parent to set daily limits to things a child can do, and it can also be set to require that something educational is done before being able to play any games. Use of the tablet may also be set to specific hours, and there is no access to web browser, social media and email from the child profile, which needs a password to exit it.
As well as the included FreeTime content, a parent may also add other digital content – apps, games, television, films and books – that is available from Amazon to a FreeTime account, so parents aren’t restricted to just the curated selection of content, but can also add content that they think is suitable.
Using FreeTime there are no in-app purchases available and no ads, reducing any potential problems. The parental controls can also be set using FreeTime profiles, which can be tailored individually to a child.
