The LeapPad Platinum and the LeapPad Glo are both educational tablets designed for children from LeapFrog. There are quite a few differences between the two tablets, though. The Platinum is a 7″ tablet with a 1024×600 pixel resolution screen, whilst the Glo is only a 5″ tablet and the resolution of its screen is only 480×272 pixels. The Glo only has a resistive screen too, compared to the multi-touch capacitive screen of the Platinum. Both have cases designed to reduce the chance of them being damaged when used.
Both tablets run on LeapFrog’s own operating system, rather than the more common Android system of many other tablets. Both have two cameras, one front facing and one rear, and the resolution of both is 2.0 megapixel (MP) on both tablets. The video recording capability is lower on the Glo, as it will only record to 240 pixels resolution, compared to the 480 of the Platinum. The Glo comes with only 4 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory, half the 8GB of the Platinum. Neither tablet has a memory card slot, so the available memory cannot be expanded for either.
The Platinum has a built-in rechargeable battery, whilst the Glo uses standard batteries. Both can get apps from the LeapFrog App Center, but the Glo does not have the web capability, strongly controlled as it is, of the Platinum. The processor of the Glo is also less powerful, only 500Mhz compared to the 1Ghz of the Platinum. Both tablets have stronger parental controls, but this is less important on the Glo, as there is not as much to be controlled.
The Platinum also comes with more included content; it has 10 apps, 6 Imagicards and a mini-game, whilst the Glo only comes with 9 apps. Both also take LeapFrog’s cartridges of educational games and content, including videos and ebooks.
Both are educational tablets, but the Glo is an updated version of the LeapPad 2, and will serve as a replacement tablet for one of those, whilst the Platinum is a much more advanced and capable tablet, and also more expensive.
