Both the iRulu BabyPad Y1 and the LeapPad Ultra are 7″ tablets designed for children. They are, however, quite different in their design. The Ultra has a 1024×600 pixel resolution screen and the Y1 has an 800×400 pixel resolution 5 point multi touch screen.
The Y1 is an Android tablet running 4.4.2 KitKat whilst the Ultra is primarily an educational tablet that runs on its own operating system. Consequently, the Y1 has access to the Android app ecology, whilst the Ultra only has access to the LeapPad one.
The BabyPad has twin speakers whilst the LeapPad only has one. Both have 3.5mm headphone jacks, allowing headphones to be plugged in. The Y1 has two front and rear facing 0.3 Megapixel (MP) cameras, whilst the Ultra front and rear facing cameras are both 2.0 MP.
Both can be connected to other devices, such as a computer, through their ports. Both also have parental controls. On the Y1, its parental controls are through Children Mode, which restricts what a child has access to, whilst in the password protected parental mode the tablet will run like a normal Android tablet. For the Ultra, its parental controls restrict internet access to only a limited number of approved destinations and content is only available from LeapPad. Consequently, the Y1 has access to Google Play Android store (as well as the iRulu Store), whilst the Ultra does not, and only has access to LeapFrog’s app library).
Both tablets have 8GB of memory; however, the memory of the BabyPad Y1 can be increased to up to 32GB using the memory card slot. Each tablet comes with WiFi; however, internet access for the Ultra is more limited.
The hardware of both tablets has been designed for children, rather than being an existing tablet that has been modified with software and a protective case. Both have also been tested for damage by children.
The iRulu BabyPad Y1 is an Android tablet designed for children, whilst the LeapPad Ultra is an educational device in the form of a tablet.
