The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition and the Fire 8 Kids Edition are both children’s tablets from Amazon, so how do they compare? The first difference is the size; the HD 10 is a 10.1″ tablet whilst the Fire 8 is an 8″ tablet. The screen resolution of the HD 10 is better at 1920×1220 pixels compared to 1280×800 pixels. Both tablets have protective cases in a number of colours, but the case of the HD 10 comes with an integral stand.
Both tablets are Android tablets, but they run Amazon’s own offshoot of the operating system. Each therefore lacks access to Google Play, instead getting content via the Amazon Appstore.
The HD 10 and the Fire 8 both come with 32 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory. Both come with memory card slots, but the HD 10 will take cards up to 512 GB in size, compared to 256 GB for the Fire 8. Each tablet has WiFi, Bluetooth and a micro USB port.
Both tablets come with front and rear facing cameras. Both cameras on the HD 10 have a resolution of 2.0 megapixels (MP); on the Fire 8, only the rear facing camera has that resolution, with the front facing camera having a resolution of 0.3 MP.
Both tablets come with Amazon’s own parental controls which allow a parent to control what a child has access to and how long they can use a tablet for. Each tablet comes with a year’s subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, Amazon’s subscription service that has over 20,000 pieces of hand curated content for children, including books, Audible books, games, apps, television programmes and films. Each tablet also comes with Amazon’s two year “worry-free” guarantee, in which Amazon say they will repair or replace a damaged tablet. The battery life of the HD 10 is up to 12 hours; that of the Fire 8, up to 10.
Both tablets are from Amazon which means that many of their features are similar; software is essentially identical. Where they differ is in technical specs. The HD 10 is a bigger tablet with better resolution, a stand integral to the case, a better front facing camera and a bigger memory card capacity. It is also more expensive. The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is a bigger, and better in some ways, advance on the Fire 8 Kids Edition.
