Both the LeapPad 2 and the LeapPad Ultra are educational tablets in LeapFrog’s LeapPad range of educational tablets, and both are aimed at the 3-9 years age group, so what are the differences, other than price, between the two tablets?
The Ultra has a 7″ screen compared to the 2’s 5″ screen. The former’s is a backlit light touch screen which is sensitive to the touch, whilst the 2’s is a less sensitive resistive screen. The resolution of the Ultra is far higher, too; 1024×600 pixels compared to 480×272. The differences in the screens make the LeapPad Ultra be more sensitive and display pictures, games, books and apps better. When it comes to video, the Ultra has 480p video recording compared to the 2’s 240p.
The Ultra has a built-in lithium ion rechargeable battery with 6+ hours of life, whilst the LeapPad 2 requires the purchase of a separate battery.
For the internet, the LeapPad Ultra has LeapSearch powered by Zui, which allows your child to visit over 1,000 LeapFrog approved kid-safe websites, whilst the LeapPad 2 lacks internet capability. The latter also lacks WiFi, so there is no ability to play peer-to-peer games with other children.
The processing power of the Ultra is faster, 800MHz compared to 550MHz, and the memory size is also double the 2’s at 8GB compared to 4GB.
Both come with included apps from LeapFrog’s App Center, but the LeapPad Ultra comes with 11 included apps, whilst the LeapPad 2 only has 9.
The Ultra, not surprisingly because it has a larger screen, is bigger and heavier than the LeapPad 2.
Both tablets have the same cameras – 2 MP front and back cameras on both – an accelerometer and access to apps. with both, the skill level adjusts depending on the child’s age, and both come with tutorials.
The LeapPad Ultra is a better, more powerful tablet than the LeapPad 2.
