The Kindle Fire HD 6 Kids Edition comes with WiFi built in that can connect to compatible public and private internet networks and hotspots, but not peer-to-peer networks.
WiFi is needed to access the internet and play streaming television programmes and films. Some other content and apps may require access to the internet in order to work, and they will need it in order to download them. Some content on FreeTime Unlimited may also require internet access.
Setup is apparently not one of the things that needs WiFi, as the Kids Edition will work straight out of the box, which is not always the case. However, it will still be needed to access content and FreeTime, so it is necessary to still have a WiFi network available when the device is initially used.
