Which is Better, the Sprout Channel Cubby or the Kurio 7S?

Sprout Channel CubbyThe Sprout Channel Cubby and the Kurio 7S are both 7″ Android tablets designed for children, so how do they compare with each other? Each comes with a 7″ touchscreen, and the resolution of it is the same for both tablets, 1024×600 pixels. Each tablet comes with a protective bumper designed to help reduce the chances of damage if the tablet is dropped, although the bumper on the Kurio protects more of the tablet than that on the Cubby.

Each tablet runs Android, the 7S running version 4.2 Jelly Bean whilst the Cubby runs the more recent 4.4 KitKat. Each tablet has access to the regular Android ecosystem, although the Cubby is probably slightly less useful to run for an adult than the Kurio tablet is. The Google Play store can be accessed on the Cubby, but only outside of Cubby Mode.

The Cubby comes with 16 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory, which is double the 7S’s 8GB of internal memory. Each also comes with a micro SD card slot, allowing the use of memory cards up to 32GB in size. The Cubby has a more powerful quad core processor compared to the dual core one in the 7S.

Each tablet comes with stereo speakers, a built-in microphone, 3.5mm audio sockets and a micro USB port, but the Cubby also comes with an HDMI port, allowing it to be connected to suitable devices such as televisions. Each tablet comes with WiFi, but the Cubby also comes with Bluetooth.

Both tablets have two cameras, a front facing one and a rear facing one. Both cameras on the Sprout Channel Cubby are both 2.0 megapixels (MP) in resolution. On the Kurio 7S, the rear facing camera is a slightly better 2.1MP resolution, whilst the front facing one is a substantially inferior 0.3MP resolution.

Each tablet comes with parental controls, although the Kurio 7S may be easier to use by adults in Mommy/Daddy Mode than the Cubby is outside of Cubby mode. The educational capabilities out of the box are probably superior on the Cubby to those on the 7S.

The Sprout Channel Cubby is generally more powerful than the Kurio 7S, having more internal memory, a more powerful processor, more ports and a better front-facing camera. Surprisingly, it also tends to be cheaper than the 7S as well.
