Tablet Comparison: nabi Elev-8 versus nabi 2S

nabi Elev-8The nabi Elev-8 and the nabi 2S are both tablets designed for children manufactured by Fuhu, so how do the two compare? The Elev-8 is an 8″ tablet whilst the 2S is a smaller, and more common, 7″. The screen resolution of both is the same, at 1280×800 pixels. Both have a protective bumper intended to reduce the chance of damage if the tablet is dropped and the bumpers of both tablets come in nabi’s signature red.

The nabi 2S comes with a high 16 gigabytes (GB) of memory but the Elev-8 comes with double that amount, with 32 GB. Each also has a memory card slot which will take microSD cards up to 32 GB in size. Both tablets are Android tablets, with the 2S running 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and the Elev-8 the more current Android 5.1 Lollipop as well as nabi’s Blue Morpho OS overlay. Both tablets have access to Google Play.

The Elev-8 has two cameras, a front facing one with a 2.0 megapixel (MP) resolution and a rear facing camera with 5.0 MP resolution, whilst the 2S has only a single, front facing camera with a 2.0 MP resolution. The 2S has a quad core processor with a fifth, batter-saver core, whilst the Elev-8 has an octo core processor and an enhanced battery. Both come with twin speakers, a microphone, a 3.5mm headphone jack and nabi’s own custom nabi Port, the latter instead of the far more common micro USB port.

Both tablets come with WiFi, Bluetooth and Near Field Communication, the latter quite uncommon in children’s tablets. Each comes with nabi’s own parental controls and both will function as a normal Android tablets in their parental mode.

Both tablets have educational uses, with extensive options built into the Blue Morpho OS overlay on the Elev-8. Both can also play games.

The two tablets do have similarities, which is not surprising as they are both made by the same company. The Elev-8 is a more powerful, more updated and technically more capable table than the nabi 2S, again not surprising because it is a more recent model. Of the two tablets, the nabi Elev-8 would definitely appear to be the superior model, as it should be, although at 8″ it may be a bit larger than preferred for a child’s tablet.
