With the LeapPad Ultra running its own system that’s designed specifically for kids and their protection, rather than having access to the app libraries that are available for Android and iOS, apps are instead purchased from LeapFrog’s own app library.
Unlike most apps from other stores, these are specifically designed for kids, often using the advice and input of relevant professionals to help create useful, fun and educational apps for children. With an emphasis on learning, these apps are on average more expensive than apps available from the various appstores on the other systems. This is partly because the LeapFrog apps do not depend on in-game ads and the purchase of items using real money as a major revenue source, as many cheap and free apps on other platforms do.
This removal of ads and in-app transactions, and the emphasis on safe and kid friendly apps, does result in a higher average price. App bundles are available that enable a number of apps to be purchased together at a reduced price.
